Why Arugam Bay?

Community, ecology, sustainability and charity
Glorious beaches, lagoons, surf, safari and much more...

Arugam Bay on the East Coast of Sri Lanka is one of the hidden gems that Sri Lanka has to offer. For years Arugam Bay was rendered all but inaccessible due to the civil war and it was devastated by the 2004 tsunami; but now it is open for business and has so much to offer!

Arugam Bay itself features an amazing and ever changing beach landscape from Main Point in the South to Potuvil Point in the North. The sweeping beach, long rolling surf and low tidal change makes it a wonderful place to visit in and of itself.

If it is surf that you are after Arugam Bay is the single best place to base yourself in Sri Lanka. If the Bay itself proves to be too rough one day a short tuktuk journey to Peanut, Whiskey, Potuvil or Elephant rock will yield completely different conditions.

But it isn't just surf that makes Arugam Bay such an attractive destination. The Sri Lankan annual weather cycle turns river mouths from estuaries into lagoons during the dry season. These lagoons offer an incredible range of wildlife and a livelihood to the local community.

Then there is the National Safari Park, ancient temples, great places to eat and so much more besides. Arugam Bay should be your first destination in Sri Lanka whether you wish to simply relax on holiday or travel and discover.
